What does it mean to be alive?

Live. Now. We all say it; know we should. Yet, we usually only begin to get serious about "seizing the day", when our days are suddenly numbered. Perhaps, it's because we do our best to avoid thinking about "the end." But if we don't consider it... how can we truly appreciate what it means to be alive?
