What does it mean to be persecuted?

from Merciful Servants of God · host Dr. Kennard Levi Brown

In the 21st century, religion has been combined with capitalism. Because of this, many people believe that religion should be run like a business.  Many view religion as being successful if you have a lot of followers.  Biblically, is this true?  Why does the Bible say the following: "Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake. Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward is great in heaven: for in the like manner did their fathers unto the prophets." (Luke 6:22-23)  "Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets." (Luke 6:26)  Why is the Master saying a believer will be hated and not spoken well of?
