What does it mean to stand in the gap so that others may live?

from Faith and Victory Church Auburn Sermons · host Faith and Victory Church

Using the story of Abraham’s intercession in Genesis 18:16–33, this message challenges every believer to understand that Christianity is not a spectator sport. We may have different gifts and responsibilities, but every Christian has both the ability and the obligation to become an intercessor. Abraham saw a situation that did not directly threaten him, yet he chose to involve himself in the plight of others. Rather than walking away, he stood before God and pleaded for mercy. His conversation with the Lord gives us a practical model for developing a strong and consistent life of intercessory prayer. Abraham’s prayers were bold. He appealed to God based on the character God had already revealed. Because of Jesus Christ, believers can now approach God’s throne of grace with even greater confidence—not through arrogance, but through faith in His mercy and saving work. Abraham’s prayers were also humble. He approached God as a friend while never forgetting the difference between himself and the Lord. True humility acknowledges God’s authority, recognizes our dependence upon Him, confesses our weakness, appeals to His mercy, and trusts His wisdom over our own. Finally, Abraham prayed specifically. He did not speak only in vague generalities. He brought clear and measurable requests before God. Specific prayer strengthens our faith, deepens our dependence upon the Lord, and helps us recognize when He answers. This message calls the church to intercede for the innocent, the lost, the wicked, and our pastors. Even those who oppose God still need prayer while there is time for them to repent and receive the saving grace of Jesus Christ. Our true battle is not merely against people, but against spiritual forces of darkness. Prayer is search and rescue on your knees. We may not know every detail of someone’s condition, but the God we are calling upon does. He knows how to rescue the lost, restore families, transform lives, and give people another chance. God is looking for people who will build a wall and stand in the gap. Let us become a church filled with believers who pray boldly, humbly, and specifically—that others may live.
