What this episode covers
What did Jesus mean when he said: "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me." (Matthew 16:24) In this sermon, we explore one of Jesus' most challenging and often misunderstood teachings. Looking at Matthew 16:21–28, we discover that taking up our cross is not about seeking suffering or enduring life's difficulties. Instead, it is about learning to follow Jesus in the ordinary moments of everyday life. As Peter struggles to understand Jesus' path to the cross, we are invited to consider what it means to surrender control, trust Jesus, and walk in his way. The cross appears not only in dramatic acts of sacrifice but in daily choices of forgiveness, obedience, generosity, humility, and love. Ultimately, Jesus shows us that the way of the cross is also the way to life.
