Does the Bible prohibit homosexuality? Can someone be a Christian while experiencing same-sex attraction? Is it true that the Church has held an erroneous and unscientific view of human sexuality for centuries? Today, these questions are becoming increasingly pressing in society. A number of contemporary scholars argue that we have actually misunderstood the Bible and that it says nothing about loving, consensual same-sex relationships. But is that really the case? To explore these questions, I invited two experienced biblical scholars — Richard S. Hess and Craig Blomberg — specialists in the Old and New Testaments. They read biblical texts in their original languages, are recognized experts in their respective fields, and have contributed to Bible translation projects. Together, we sought to provide a substantive response to the key objections raised against traditional Christian teaching on homosexuality. Hess is Distinguished Professor of Old Testament and Semitic Languages at Denver Seminary. He specializes in the Old Testament, ancient Hebrew, archaeology, and the history of the ancient Near East. He is the author of nine books, editor and co-author of more than 50 scholarly volumes, and author of over 100 academic articles. He has contributed to several English Bible translations, including the New International Version (NIV), English Standard Version (ESV), and Holman Christian Standard Bible.
