What Does the Greatest Commandment Mean?

from Living Biblically · host Church & Family Life

What is the greatest commandment according to Jesus and why is it important? In this video, Scott Aniol discusses the importance of loving God with all our hearts, souls, minds, and strength, which Jesus identifies as the greatest commandment in the New Testament. While knowing the right theology and biblical doctrines is important, it is not enough to make us Christians. We must also have faith and trust in Christ and our affections for God must be involved. This involves finding our ultimate joy and satisfaction in God and not in other sources, which is what we worship and what compels us to live a certain way. Aniol also highlights that simply knowing how God wants us to live will not necessarily compel us to live that way. Many Christians, even pastors, have fallen into sin despite knowing the right information and theology. Their problem was that they found their ultimate joy and satisfaction in sources other than God. Thus, our ultimate aim should be to find delight in God first and foremost, through immersing ourselves in scripture and the regular means of grace that God has given us, such as church attendance and corporate worship on the Lord's Day. Matthew 22:37-38 (NKJV) - "Jesus said to him, 'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.' This is the first and great commandment."
