What Every Disciple Needs the Most (John 14:15-17)

This may seem like an abrupt change in subject for Jesus, but that’s only because we’ve been studying this in chunks. In the broader context, Jesus was continuing His conversation with His disciples in their final hours together before the cross. If you were to ask these men if they loved Jesus in that moment, all of them would undoubtedly have answered with a loud affirmative. In a way, it was easy to be with Jesus, see Him do all these fantastic things, hear His teaching, and say, “Jesus, I love you!” But with His impending departure, that love would be tested, and if it were genuine, it would be evidenced through their recall of His teaching and obedience to His commandments. To do that, they would need help…or a Helper.
