What got you started in Kenya?

from The Heidi Totten Podcast Hosted by Heidi Totten

“What got you started in Kenya?” is the question people ask me most often about our work with 100 Humanitarians International. Considering how much I hate heat, dust, and bugs, it’s a fair question. In this episode, I share how my current business partner, Lori Walker, kept encouraging me to go, and how my first drum circle at Bridget Cook-Burch’s Inspired Writer’s Retreat brought an unexpected experience of the African savannah and a wall of male lions. I finally agreed to a one-and-done trip. Then, on day three, sitting in an Anglican church in western Kenya, I felt like a veil dropped—and everything I had done in my life had prepared me to work with families there. This is a personal conversation about faith, an invitation I resisted, and what we might discover when we give an unfamiliar possibility a chance.
