What Happens When Christ Disrupts Our Comfortable Life

Send us Fan MailIn this homily, we reflect on Christ's encounter with the rich young man and a difficult question at the heart of the Christian life: What are we unwilling to give up in order to follow Christ?The rich young man had kept the commandments and genuinely desired eternal life. Yet when Christ asked him to sell what he possessed, give to the poor, and follow Him, he went away sorrowful. His wealth had become more than something he possessed—it had become something he could not imagine surrendering.We face the same danger. Wealth, career, status, comfort, family, accomplishments, habits, and even our own sense of identity can become attachments that compete with Christ for the highest place in our lives.Sometimes we want to love and worship God while quietly asking Him not to disrupt the life we have built for ourselves. But following Christ inevitably requires sacrifice. It requires us to empty ourselves, surrender our passions, and be willing to endure discomfort for the sake of something greater.“If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” — Matthew 19:21Our ultimate identity cannot rest in what we own, what we accomplish, or how the world defines us.
