I'm Carrie Dan. A lot of things have eroded in America over the past, say, 40 or 50 years. In good ways and in bad ways. In good ways, like the erosion of those unwritten, outdated rules about who deserves to be an elected official.
In bad ways, like the weakening of community bonds with our neighbors. In, well, other ways, like the erosion of Americans' enthusiasm for disco. But something we know has eroded a lot in recent decades is Americans' trust in most institutions. And it's having a big impact on how we're dealing with the coronavirus issue right now.
Gallup has tracked this since the mid-1970s, and their polling shows just how much big institutions used to be rocks of trust for the American public. And now, not so much. Congress, you know about, right? A whopping 11% of Americans say they have a lot of faith in Congress compared to a slightly more respectable 40% or so in the mid-70s.
But then there's also churches and other organized religious institutions. They got a faithful thumbs up from about two thirds of folks 40 years ago. Now, down to just one third. Trust in banks?
That is similarly slashed in half since about 1980. And then there's the media. I don't have to tell you that confidence in journalists and the media has plummeted, too. Something that all of us in the journalism industry have to be extremely mindful of at all times, but especially at a time like this.
Now that we in a public health crisis with coronavirus it also worth looking at Americans faith in medicine and doctors and well science In 1975 eight in ten Americans said they had confidence in quote medicine But when you ask about quote the medical system now that number stands at just 36 A part of that is surely about the medical system meaning things like insurance companies not just medical professionals, though. Another poll from the Pew Research Center last year found that Americans actually have a very complementary view of doctors generally, with three quarters saying they view them positively. Only slightly fewer say they have a positive view of medical researchers who are, of course, on the forefront of this public health crisis. Now, a couple of things worth noting.
Young people tend to be more skeptical, all of this polling has found, about pretty much every major institution, which, you know, in some ways is part of being a younger person, you know, rock and roll, fight the system. But it can be very dangerous at a time like now, when public health officials are absolutely pleading with young people to stay out of big groups and bars and restaurants because they risk spreading the virus further. So if you know a young person who doesn't believe the experts in politics or science and is out hitting the bars, please try to get them to see the wisdom of doing that whole rock and roll, fight the system thing from their couch for the next little while, will you? And one ray of sunshine that I'll close on is that there are a few institutions where confidence is actually, if not stable, actually up in the last few years.
One of those nationwide is small business. A healthy majority of Americans, about 70%, say, heck yeah, I love small businesses. And if you're in that group, or even if you're not, but you just love the little locally owned restaurants or the bodega or the brewery or the hardware store or the barber in your neighborhood, please look into a safe and socially distanced way to support them right now. If you can afford it, buy a gift card, order delivery, give to an employee support fund if there is one, or just tell your friends how awesome that small business really is.
