Very rarely, it becomes a national call-and-response that people pass along like a secret handshake. That’s what happened to The Angels’ “Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again,” and I’m joined by founding guitarist John Brewster to explain how a debut single that initially flopped grew into one of the most recognizable moments in Australian rock. John takes us back to Adelaide and into his family’s deep classical music lineage, including his grandfather’s role in the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and how that DNA later fed into the ambitious Symphony of Angels shows. We also get into the messy, practical side of building a band: early promo gigs, being broke on the road, and the pressure of throwing “normal careers” out the window and hoping the music works. Along the way, John shares a moving story about his dad finally listening and offering rare praise that still echoes decades later. We dig into songwriting and influence too: watching AC/DC record at Albert Studios, chasing a sound that isn’t a copy, and the Bob Dylan connection that shaped John as a rhythm guitarist while Rick Brewster became a singular lead voice. Then we tackle the mystery every fan loves debating, the first night the famous audience response exploded in Mount Isa in 1983 and how it spread across Australia with no internet. John also reflects on the “50 Years On” tour, the bandmates, crew and fans they carry with them, the next generation onstage, and the unexpected global reach that includes nods from Metallica, Keith Urban, and Jelly Roll. If you’ve ever yelled the response, heard it in a pub, or wondered how a live moment becomes folklore, this one’s for you. Subscribe, share it with a mate, and leave a review with your first memory of hearing the chant. What has John Brewster been up to lately?
