What If It Hurts?
from Infinite Threads: Conversations on Love, Connection, and Compassion · host Bob
Welcome back to Infinite Threads. I’m your host Bob.This week, we are spending time with the what-ifs of love.Yesterday, we began with a lighter question. What if love surprises you?Today, we come to the question that usually waits right behind it.What if it hurts? That is not a small question.Anyone who has loved for very long knows the answer is not pretend optimism. Love can hurt. It can disappoint us. It can open places in the heart we thought were safely closed. It can bring joy so close to us that the possibility of losing it becomes frightening. There is no honest way to talk about love without admitting that.To love someone is to let them matter.Once someone matters, life is no longer untouched by what happens to them.Their sadness can reach us.Their absence can change the room.Their words can stay with us longer than we expected. That is part of what makes love beautiful, and part of what makes it risky.I understand why people protect themselves. After enough disappointment, the heart starts building careful little fences. It learns where the old pain entered and tries to make sure nothing gets in that way again. There is wisdom in protection.A heart is not wrong for remembering where it was wounded. But sometimes fear keeps building long after wisdom has finished its work. The fence becomes a wall. The wall becomes a room. Then the room becomes smaller than the life we were meant to live. That is where the question gets difficult. Is avoiding pain the same thing as being safe?I am not sure it is.A life without love may avoid certain wounds, but it also misses certain joys.It misses the relief of being understood. It misses the laughter that comes easier because someone else is near.It misses the strange comfort of knowing another person carries your name with tenderness inside them.Love does not promise an unwounded life.It does offer a larger one.Maybe that is why it remains worth the risk. Not because it never breaks our hearts.Because it gives the heart something worth opening for. There are different kinds of hurt, of course. Some pain is part of loving in a fragile world. People change. Time moves. Loss eventually touches every life. Even good love carries some ache because nothing here can be held forever in the same form. But there is another kind of hurt that comes from harm, control, cruelty, or neglect. That kind should never be romanticized.Love is not proven by how much pain someone can endure.A relationship that keeps making you disappear is not made holy by calling it love.Real love may ask for courage, patience, and honesty, but it should not require the death of your own soul. That distinction matters.Because when people say love hurts, sometimes they are talking about grief. Sometimes they are talking about fear. Sometimes they are talking about mistreatment they were taught to accept. Those are not the same thing.Healthy love can hurt because life is tender.Unhealthy love hurts because something is wrong. We need enough wisdom to know the difference.Still, even when love is good, vulnerability can feel dangerous. It takes courage to be known. It takes courage to hope.It takes courage to let another person’s happiness matter to us.No wonder the heart hesitates.Hope is not as simple as people make it sound. Hope asks us to stand near a door we cannot control. It asks us to believe something good may enter, even though something difficult may enter too. That is not foolishness. That is bravery with soft hands.I think of all the people who loved again after loss. They did not forget what pain felt like. They did not become naïve.Somehow, they allowed tenderness to return without demanding that life guarantee the outcome first. That is remarkable.A person can be hurt and still remain capable of warmth.A heart can be broken and still become generous.Someone can carry grief and still make room for joy. That tells me love has a strength we do not always recognize. It does not erase what happened. It does not make us untouched. It helps us keep becoming alive. There is a line I keep circling in my own mind. The cost of love is vulnerability. The cost of refusing love is isolation.Neither path is painless. But only one of them can make the world larger.Only one lets another life enter ours with enough meaning to change us.Only one gives us the chance to become more than a guarded version of ourselves. That may be why love is worth it.Because the goal of life is not simply to remain unhurt. The goal is to become fully human. And human beings are made for connection. We may deny it for a while. We may dress up loneliness as independence. We may tell ourselves that needing anyone is weakness. But the heart knows better. It was built to answer another heart. That answer may come through romance. It may come through friendship, family, community, or the quiet bond between a person and the creature that waits at the door when they come home.Love takes many forms. All of them ask something from us.All of them can leave us changed. The risk is real.So is the gift.Maybe that is what we have to remember when fear gets loud.Love is not safe in the way a locked door is safe.It is safe in a different way.The way sunlight is safe after a long night. The way a trusted voice is safe when we are frightened. The way being seen is safe after too much time spent hiding. It does not remove every danger. It reminds us why we want to live beyond survival. That matters.Because there is a difference between being alive and being unreachable. There is a difference between protecting the heart and sealing it away. The heart needs shelter, yes.But it also needs air.Love gives it air.Sometimes love comes gently enough that we barely realize we are breathing differently. A conversation becomes easier. A room feels warmer. A hard memory loses a little of its power because someone stays kind while we tell the truth. That kind of love is worth noticing. It may not take away every fear. But it can teach fear that it does not have to be the only voice in the room.So what if love hurts? Then we honor the truth of that.We do not mock the fear.We do not rush the heart. We do not pretend every open door is wise to walk through. But we also do not let pain have the final authority over what is possible. That would give the wound too much power.A wound can teach us caution. It should not be allowed to write the whole future. There may still be good ahead. There may still be people who handle our tenderness with care. There may still be moments that remind us why the risk matters. The heart can learn slowly. It can open a little at a time.Love does not always need us to leap.Sometimes it only asks us not to bolt the door quite so tightly. That may be enough for today.A little openness.A little trust in the possibility of gentleness.A willingness to believe that hurt is not the only thing love can bring.Because love can also bring laughter back into a life.It can bring rest.It can bring the feeling of being met instead of managed. It can bring the strange and beautiful relief of knowing someone is glad you exist. That is no small thing. To be loved well is to be reminded that our life has weight in another heart. To love well is to let someone else’s life become sacred to us.Yes, that can hurt. But it can also make life shimmer. And I do not want fear to take that from us.Thank you for spending this time with me on Infinite Threads.Today’s what-if is tender. What if love hurts?Maybe the honest answer is that sometimes it will. But another answer belongs beside it.What if it heals something too? What if it gives back more of us than fear ever could? What if the risk of love is part of what makes life worth living?Infinite Threads is a reader-supported publication.
