What if it works?
from Daily Spark Hosted by William Liao
After working on an an app the last couple of weeks, I almost quit this morning. I was repeatedly running into issues building a piece of the software and it started to feel like there wasn’t going to be a clear path forward. But then I asked myself: “What if I can make this work? Would the outcome be worth me worth trying to stick with this problem for a little longer to see if I can make it work?” After struggling for a few more hours, something clicked and I finally figured out a serviceable way forward. I’m excited about where things are headed again. My sense is that most people either quit too soon or too late—this is a phenomenon I’m still trying to wrap my head around. What I observed today is that it helps to remind yourself of the outcome you’re working for and to ask yourself: “how great would it be if I could make this work?” If your response is lukewarm, that’s probably a decent sign to quit. If your responses is excitement, then that’s certainly one compelling reason to stick around a little bit longer. This is a public episode.
