What If the Story You Believe Isn’t True? Misunderstanding, Despair & Healing
from Linda's Corner: Conversations that help you heal, grow and thrive · host Linda Bjork
What if some of the pain we carry isn't only about what happened to us—but about the story we created around what happened? In this deeply personal solo episode, Linda shares how a season of profound despair led her to question some of the beliefs she held about God, herself, and her circumstances. What she discovered became an important part of her healing: sometimes the beliefs underneath our pain aren't actually true. Linda explores the connection between misunderstanding and despair and shares stories from the scriptures, along with a surprising and painful experience involving The Chosen, that helped her recognize beliefs she didn't even realize she was carrying. One of those beliefs was essentially: God loves His children... except me. People can heal... except me. Things can get better... except for me. Those hidden “except me” beliefs can shape how we interpret our experiences and can leave us feeling rejected, hopeless, stuck, or alone. But what if the story we're telling ourselves isn't true? Linda invites you to consider a different question when you find yourself discouraged or struggling: “What am I believing that might not actually be true?” This isn't about pretending painful experiences didn't happen or simply thinking positively. It's about becoming aware of the beliefs we've attached to those experiences, questioning what we've been telling ourselves, and making room for a truer and healthier perspective. In this episode, Linda explores: How misunderstanding can contribute to despair The difference between what happens to us and what we believe it means The hidden stories we may carry about ourselves, God, and our circumstances How “except me” beliefs can keep us stuck Why becoming aware of our beliefs can be an important part of healing How questioning an old story can open the door to hope and possibility A simple question you can use to begin uncovering beliefs that may no longer serve you You don't have to solve everything today. Instead, think of one area of your life where you feel discouraged, stuck, hopeless, or in despair. Then ask: What am I believing about this situation—or about myself—that might not actually be true? Bring it into the light. Question it. And then ask: “What might be more true?” Because sometimes healing begins when we discover that the story we've been living with isn't the whole story.
