What If We Stopped Financially Supporting Millionaires?
from Walter Rhein Podcast · host Walter Rhein
I think one of the chief issues that the people of the United States have not managed to perceive is that we have power in this country. We can make the choice to stop supporting millionaires. If that happens, the millionaire class won’t be able to torment us anymore. But making that change will require us to spend deliberately. There’s a very reliable auto garage in my town. They do excellent work, and if they can save you a couple bucks by heading down to the junkyard to get a used part, they will. That can be the difference between spending $300 on something new or $10 on something used.If you’re driving around an old car with 200,000 miles on it, like I do, it makes sense to get the used part. This auto garage understands this because so many people are stuck driving cars like that. The mechanics at this business understand it’s important to help people who are struggling have the means to get to work.Their business model rests on helping everyone out.Every time I have a car issue, I make an appointment there. The problem is that there are many people in our society who don’t even consider seeking out a garage like that. They’re content to go straight to the dealership with the artificial waterfall out front. They assume that the inexpensive garage doesn’t provide as good a service. This belief is so deeply rooted they don’t even think to question their own thoughts. That level of indoctrination is what allows millionaires to continue to exist.Sponsor me for $5 a month ❤️ Sponsor me for $4 a month 🧡 Sponsor me for $3 a month 💛 Sponsor me for $2 a month 💚 Thank you! 💙When are people going to learn that just because you pay more for something doesn’t mean you get a better product? We expect the government to award contracts to the lowest bidder, why shouldn’t we do that as well? Both instances represent how our money is spent. Most Americans don’t recognize how conditioned they are to overpay for everything. Don’t even get me started on healthcare. In almost any case, people have the opportunity to go to a locally owned business that will provide them a better service at a lower cost. In addition to that, it keeps money in the community for the benefit of all. Too often, people will instead choose the convenience of jumping online and making a sale that only benefits some cruel billionaire.Perhaps it’s because we need to burst our national delusion about wealth. The general public likes to believe that wealth is a consequence of hard work and talent. The truth is that most obscenely rich people get their money because of privilege and cheating. They get bailouts and subsidies and special treatment that the rest of us will never see. So why should we give them our business too?So, from now on, every time you pay a bill or make a purchase, consider where that money is going. Take a moment to check all your subscriptions, even to things like your insurance, your heat bill, your electricity, and your entertainment.Millionaires tend to own industries that force people to support them. They take the dollars that are removed from your account before you ever get to handle them. We need to demand an end to the billionaire paycheck deduction. Why should they get it?Why can’t we give that money to the kid down the street with a lemonade stand? When you’re trying to decide who you should support in service of freedom, consider how all the multi-million dollar industries have contributed to the mess we’re in now. This disaster isn’t the result of any one person. Instead, it’s the failure of all the people with wealth and power. The only ones who are innocent, are the people who are struggling to make ends meet by selling lemonade, or driving old cars, or offering discount service out of the kindness of their hearts. We’re in desperate need of a new generation of voices that have the courage to point out the flaws we’ve all been conditioned to ignore. That requires a willingness of the general population to take a risk on voices that aren’t as well known.I know it’s a common thing to support names you already recognize. But keep in mind that a person who already has millions of dollars doesn’t need your $5 a month subscription. They’re already supported by larger entities. It’s the grassroots voices that need your support. There are people outside our exploitative system that are doing critical work. This is is the kind of work that the big name journalists who have gotten rich inside the system will never consider. We need a whole new philosophy when it comes to our media. We need a whole new philosophy when it comes to our personal and national ideology. Nobody can afford to zombie scroll anymore. You have to be deliberate in choosing the content you consume.Sponsor me for $5 a month ❤️ Sponsor me for $4 a month 🧡 Sponsor me for $3 a month 💛 Sponsor me for $2 a month 💚 Thank you! 💙Carefully consider every dollar you spend. Go to the farmer’s market. Spend money on hard-working people where you can see the dirt caked into their fingernails. People like that aren’t as polished, they aren’t as slick as their big money funded competitors. But they know what it means to work. We do too.We have to support people who know the struggle of paying rent. They know the challenge of getting health care. We shouldn’t support people who live in gated communities and who cruise along with state funded services they deny to the rest of us.We have to say, “No more inequality.” The best way we can do that is by refusing to support the people who have most benefited from an unfair system. Look for the people who are just getting by, those are your allies. You might find that if we make deliberate choices, if stop enabling these millionaires, you’ll discover these millionaires aren’t able to exist as millionaires any longer. You’ll also see that every single one of them lives to such a degree of excess that they’re unable to survive without pushing and exploiting the rest of us. But without us, they disappear. The task has fallen to us to create a society where everyone has a realistic chance of making around $100,000 a year. We get there when every single one of us starts making a deliberate choice not to support the people that are already making tens of millions. They don’t need our money.Choose to support the people who support you. Support the people who understand you and will fight for you. We don’t have to feel pressure and guilt to give our money to entitled jerks who will only use it to maintain a system that exploits us.We’re standing on the front line in a war against injustice. Don’t support anyone who refuses to fight. You all make this newsletter happen! Thanks for your sponsorship!
