Egress filtering controls traffic that leaves a network, system, application, or security boundary. Organizations can permit only approved destinations, protocols, ports, applications, or user groups while blocking unexpected activity. For example, workstations may be allowed to access the internet only through a managed proxy, and servers may be prevented from making direct external connections unless a business requirement exists. Effective egress filtering supports data loss prevention, malware containment, and policy enforcement, but poorly designed rules may interrupt legitimate services.
