In this life stage, we can expect personal fulfillment, legacy, and personal growth. We are drawn to give back to others in such ways as volunteering, mentoring, and philanthropy. Those of us who do not engage in Generativity can expect to be in Erikson's stage of Stagnation. The example I give of this is what I call The Ebineezer Effect. Having all the things life can physically offer us, but without experiencing the emotional joy to accompany it. It wasn't until Ebineezer Scrooge, who was a self-made guy, living in a mansion with servants, gave back, that he experienced joy. The ways we can engage in Generativity are Volunteering, Mentoring, and Philanthropy.______________________ResourcesDan McAdams: Generativity on Youtube https://youtu.be/Ruktwr9pkIwThe Secret to Maximizing Productivity: Psychology Today https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/the-right-side-40/202202/the-secret-maximizing-productivityMaking Civic Engagement Work for Optimal Aging: Psychology Today https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/the-right-side-40/202105/making-civic-engagement-work-optimal-agingThe Right Side of 40 (Substack): https://deborahheiserphd.substack.com/Psychology Today: The Right Side of 40: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/contributors/deborah-heiser-phd______________________For more podcast stories from After 40 with Dr. Deborah Heiser, visit: https://www.itspmagazine.com/after-40-podcastWatch the The Right Side of 40 playlist on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLnYu0psdcllRiYCWyyhoLJqyUE0ERuMfdITSPmagazine YouTube Channel:📺 https://www.youtube.com/@itspmagazineBe sure to share and subscribe!
