Imagine the instinctual part of our brain as a person who used to have plenty of work but is now unemployable due to the lack of demand for his services is. This little guy runs around creating scenarios to make himself feel like he is still an asset in the same capacity he once was. His activity is pointless and causes more harm than good. He doesn't even realize that he is creating major problems for his co-workers, the more rational parts of the brain, as he continues to engage in his mindless and disruptive busy work.
