He lies there finished; and if we are further surprised by him, perhaps by what we find in his will, it is only because we were ignorant of what he was all the time…If Smith is dead, there is a closed definition of what it means to be Smith; if Smith is alive, the definition is still being written…Jesus lived and then died.
