Lake Superior is the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area and the third largest by volume, holding 10% of the world's surface fresh water. Lake Superior has a surface area of 31,700 sq miles. Its average depth is 80.5 fathoms or 483 feet with a maximum depth of 222.17 fathoms or 1,333 ft. The great lakes which consist of Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario and they have about 10,000 estimated shipwrecks in their waters.
