Was Killmonger Really the Villain? The Ethics of Black Panther

Was Killmonger truly the villain of Black Panther, or does that label overlook the moral and cultural complexity of his character? Gwendolyn Dolske and Rudy Salo speak with communication studies professor Dr. Darius Benton about his research examining Erik Killmonger through the traditional characteristics of heroes and villains. They explore why audiences often rely on a simple good-versus-evil framework, even when a character's motivations complicate that judgment. The conversation examines Killmonger's experience as a Black American disconnected from Wakanda, the moral consequences of Wakanda's isolation, and the tension between protecting one's own society and intervening to alleviate suffering elsewhere. They also discuss utilitarianism, race, media representation, Black masculinity, communal responsibility, and the women of Wakanda, whose intelligence, courage, and leadership challenge the idea that T'Challa is the film's sole hero.
