What to Actually Ask Your Pharmacist

from The Sunny Side by SOLEY · host SOLEY

What should you ask your pharmacist about a supplement? Three questions, in this order. Does anything I take interact with what I am prescribed? Is there a timing rule — with food, apart from something else, morning rather than night? And is there anything here I should stop before a procedure? This episode exists because a listener called the show out. Every week, when a question gets too close to somebody's body, the answer is "ask your pharmacist" — and nobody had ever explained what to say once you arrive. So: ask for the pharmacist rather than the counter, pick a mid-morning mid-week hour, and bring photographs of the backs of the bottles. An interaction question is about two specific things — a named medicine and a named plant at a named amount. "I take a garlic thing" is not a question anyone can answer. The reason to ask someone outside a supplement company is the one thing no brand will ever have: your prescription record. A label can name the categories to be careful about — this one names blood thinners and antiplatelet medication, blood pressure medication, heart medication and nitrates — but it cannot tell you whether the thing in your cupboard falls into one of them. Cathy raises the obvious conflict: pharmacies sell supplements too. Rupert accepts it and offers a test rather than an act of faith — listen for whether the answer names a specific reason or reaches for a shelf. The same test, he says, works on this podcast.
