What to Do When You're Envious of Someone Else's Marriage
from Daily Devotions for Busy Lives
You watch another couple, and something in you twists. They finish each other's sentences. They laugh at each other's jokes in a way you and your spouse haven't in a long time. You drive home from that dinner feeling worse than when you walked in, taking inventory of everything your own marriage seems to be missing. The comparison feels like information, as if you're seeing the truth about their marriage and yours side by side. But the comparison is rigged. You're measuring what they let you see against everything you know about your own. This episode opens with Jenn, scrolling one night past a friend's glowing anniversary post. Jenn was married and happy enough, but something still pinched. She remembered her dating years, when friends talked openly about the good and the messy, so no relationship looked flawless. Married life felt different. Her friends' marriages looked airtight, while hers, seen from the inside, looked like ordinary work.Scripture goes to the root of that discontent. Paul wrote in 1 Timothy 6:6-8, "Now godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content." Paul is warning against measuring your life by what you don't have. The moment you rank yourself against everyone else, you lose, because there is always someone with more, and the wanting never ends. Contentment breaks that cycle by receiving what God has given you as enough.Bring that home to your marriage. Yours is not their marriage, and it was never supposed to be. You don't see the tense conversations and the weeks they'd never post about. What you have in front of you is your own marriage, with its ordinary work and its own history, and God can do something in it that no amount of comparing ever will. Bart shares what he hears as a pastor from people discouraged about their marriages, and the reminder he gives every time: you're only seeing that couple from the outside. Jenn came to the same insight. Once two people say "I do," they stop airing the small stuff, so every couple looks like one happy unit while the arguments happen offstage. She had been comparing her backstage to everyone else's highlight reel.BY THE TIME YOU FINISH LISTENING, YOU'LL DISCOVER:Why comparing your marriage to others is a rigged game you can't winWhat 1 Timothy 6:6-8 says about contentment being great gainA simple step for trading envy for gratitude in your own marriageYou've been comparing your backstage to someone else's highlight reel. Be grateful for the marriage in your hands, and let God do what comparison never could.Share This Episode:https://www.dailydevotionsforbusylives.com/315Need Prayer?
