The word “emotional” is right there in the name “emotional eating,” so it’s clear that it’s deeply tied to our emotions. But I don’t think we always recognize just how deeply connected it is.Emotional eating is a coping mechanism. It’s a way we deal with our emotions when they arise. We use food as a band-aid — a way to soothe ourselves and distract from what we’re feeling because we don’t know how to deal with those emotions directly.This pattern likely started in childhood. When we’re young, we rely on our parents and caregivers to model how to move through discomfort and hold space for us.
