What's Actually Missing From Retreats That Don't Land

"If people don't feel safe, they can't really listen." *** Mellissa Seaman on the missing role in great group events: the Guardian. Mellissa first learned the secret art of being a Guardian as a teenager at her Catholic high school, helping lead Teens Encounter Christ retreats. Her job was to sit at a round table with a group of students and help them feel safe, included, and contained enough to actually participate. Years later, after she met her Apache mama and mentor, Maria Yraceburu, the importance of this role got driven home in a much deeper way. Maria explained that in her family, the Guardian was one of the most important roles in ceremony. The Guardian holds the vessel of the group secure, makes sure people have what they need, and helps everyone feel belonging and connection, so the group can relax inside the experience. It can sound trivial, like worrying about the bathroom or the snack table. But under the logistics is the energetic message: I've got you. You can relax.
