What's next for Venezuelan Oil & Gas? Former Oil CEO & Hostage Tells The True Story of the CITGO 6.
from The Energy Executive 360 with Emilio Faulmata · host TEE360 STUDIO by Emilio Faulmata
In this episode of The Energy Executive 360 Podcast, we sit down with José Ángel Pereira, former President of CITGO Petroleum, to explore an extraordinary journey through Venezuela’s oil industry, executive leadership, nearly five years of captivity, and ultimately, resilience and rebuilding. A fourth-generation oil & gas professional, José spent more than three decades in the industry, experiencing PDVSA’s golden era, its transformation under Hugo Chávez, and its eventual decline before moving to the United States and eventually becoming President of CITGO Petroleum. But in November 2017, everything changed. José travelled from Houston to Caracas with five colleagues for what was supposed to be a routine business meeting. After completing their presentation, the six executives were suddenly accused of being American spies, handcuffed and taken into captivity. José would spend the next 10 months in solitary confinement and nearly five years away from his family, at one point losing around 100 pounds. José shares how the six executives developed a survival plan built around discipline, exercise, food, faith and collective leadership; how his son spent four years helping provide the food and support that kept him alive; and how he secretly smuggled letters to his wife from captivity that would eventually become his memoir. We also discuss the moment José was finally told “put your civil clothes on so that you're free,” the prisoner swap that brought him home, meeting his grandson for the first time, and how the experience completely transformed his understanding of family, faith, gratitude and what truly matters in life. Finally, José takes us back inside the Venezuelan oil industry and shares his perspective on what went wrong at PDVSA and what could come next for one of the world's largest oil & gas resource holders—including why he believes smaller and mid-sized companies could help drive a new wave of investment and potentially rebuild production.
