What’s the Destination? Rethinking How Students Access Learning

from The Community Effect

What if the activity you’re using to assess student learning is actually getting in the way of seeing what your students understand? In this episode of The Community Effect Podcast, Cindy Robinson explores the difference between the activity and the learning, and why that distinction matters when we’re planning lessons, supporting diverse learners, and thinking about instructional rigor. Cindy introduces a simple framework: the activity is the vehicle, and the learning is the destination. Once we’re clear about the destination, we can begin to notice when a particular task, format, reading level, writing requirement, or set of directions is creating a barrier that doesn’t actually belong to the learning. Drawing from Universal Design for Learning (UDL), Cindy walks through real classroom examples in ELA, science, and math and explores how teachers can make intentional adjustments without changing what students are expected to understand or demonstrate. In this episode, you’ll explore: How to identify the actual learning destination before planning an activity The difference between a learning goal and the pathway used to reach it How to recognize barriers that may prevent students from accessing or demonstrating learning When student struggle is an important part of the learning The question every teacher can ask before removing a barrier: “Does this barrier belong to the learning?” How to maintain rigor while creating greater access for students Examples of using audio, visuals, discussion, models, oral responses, and other pathways to demonstrate understanding How professional judgment helps teachers decide what can change while preserving the learning goal Why accessibility and rigor can exist together in the classroom Cindy also shares a practical way to apply this idea to your next lesson: start with one lesson, identify the destination, notice where a student might get stuck, and ask what you can change without changing the destination. Because sometimes the pathway can change while the learning stays the same. The vehicle can change. The destination doesn't have to.
