What's with the obsession with Social Media?

I had this realization of the weight and power we give to social media profiles the other day and It kind of freaked me out. How can something so curated, so filtered, so perfectly posed be put on such a pedestal. That pedestal can crumble people's reputation, create long lasting opinions and more.
