What's Your Name, Mr. Elephant?

from News For Kids · host ICRT

What's Your Name, Mr. Elephant? Scientists say elephants have names! How do they know this? We can hear some elephant sounds. Here's a loud sound. They make low sounds too. Here's a low sound. Elephants also make VERY low sounds. Our ears can't hear them! With these very low sounds, they call each other. They use a different sound for each elephant. That different sound is the elephant's name! This is very cool. Many people think only humans use names to call others. That's wrong! How do people know we are talking to them? Many times, we use their names. When we see our friends, we say "Hi, Johnny" or "Hello, Emma." An elephant has about fifty friends. It uses names for them too! An elephant can also call a friend from six kilometers away. Many elephants can hear that call. Using a name is important then. Scientists are going to keep studying elephant sounds. Maybe we will learn that elephants talk to each other! And who knows? Maybe one day, we can call their names and talk to them! ________________________________ Vocabulary 大象不但記憶力驚人,還會互相呼叫名字。 1. call 叫做 What's that new guy's name? I don't know. This Impact Studios production is a collaboration with the Governor family, UTS Faculty of Law and Jumbunna Institute for Indigenous Education and Research. The Last Outlaws teamKatherine Biber - UTS Law Professor and Chief InvestigatorAunty Loretta Parsley - Great-granddaughter of Jimmy Governor and the Governor Family Historian Leroy Parsons - Governor descendant, Narrator and Co-WriterKaitlyn Sawrey - Host, Writer and Senior ProducerFrank Lopez - Writer, Managing Next Generation Energy Systems Cambridge University Background Stakeholders working with energy systems have to make complex decisions formulated from risk-based assessments about the future. The move towards more renewables in our energy systems complicates matters even further, requiring the development of an integrated power grid and continuous and steady transformation of the UK power system. Network flows must be managed reliably under uncertain demands, uncertain supply, emerging network technologies and possible failures and, further, prices in related markets can be highly volatile. Mathematicians working with engineers and economists, can make significant contributions to address such issues, by helping to develop fit-for-purpose models for next generation energy systems. These interdisciplinary approaches are looking to address a range of associated problems, including modelling, prediction, simulation, control, market and mechanism design and optimisation.
