Gareth Bryne is the Bull whose harnessed by ring of Roses. His pondering 'the old pipe' is Bryne's reassessment of those old loyalties. Gareth's team of aging veterans is hot on the tail Suian's group, and as they ride and search for information on their whereabouts, Bryne tells his men a funny story about how he once went up against Elaida, Suian, and Morgase in an argument about protecting Andor's borders. He may be a great warrior, but he fared poorly against those extremely formidable women. He doesn't know that his life is still directed by the same three women. The Bull may have been put out to pasture, but he still lives on their farm whether or not he understands.
