When an Upwork “Interview” Becomes Free Consulting

In this episode, I talk about why I’m becoming more cautious with Upwork and why freelancers and agencies need to pay attention to what they’re actually getting for the money they spend on the platform. Upwork used to be one of my strongest sources of business, but between Connects, fees, increased competition, and lower-quality opportunities, the economics have changed a lot. I also break down a recent job post where the client asked applicants extremely detailed questions about Meta campaign management, troubleshooting, ROAS, CPA, creative testing, and real campaign results—before even offering an interview. At some point, there’s a difference between evaluating someone’s expertise and asking experienced marketers to hand over their strategy for free. Upwork can still produce clients, and I’m still using it, but I’m dialing it back and putting more energy into building my own acquisition channels through paid media, organic content, and direct funnels.
