When Attachment Gets Activated: Self-Regulation, Co-Regulation, External Regulation & the Ways We Seek Safety

from Parenting Doctors Podcast · host Dr. Daniel van Ingen

Episode 16: When Attachment Gets Activated Self-Regulation, Co-Regulation, External Regulation & the Ways We Seek Safety What happens to us when a relationship suddenly feels uncertain, disconnected, or unsafe? Some of us move closer. We want to talk, understand, repair, reconnect, and receive reassurance. Others move away. We need silence, distance, independence, or space before we can feel settled again. And some of us move back and forth between the two. In Episode 16 of What We Were Never Taught, Dr. Daniel van Ingen explores what happens when our attachment system becomes activated and how our attachment tendencies influence the ways we try to regulate ourselves. Rather than treating attachment styles as fixed categories, this episode looks at anxious, dismissive-avoidant, fearful-avoidant, and secure patterns as tendencies that can emerge differently depending on the person, relationship, circumstances, and level of emotional activation. The episode also explores an important distinction between self-regulation, co-regulation, and external regulation. Healthy relationships allow us to receive comfort, reassurance, and connection from another person without making that person entirely responsible for our emotional stability. At the same time, someone who seeks distance when overwhelmed may not care or love any less than someone who seeks closeness. Distance and proximity can both become strategies the nervous system uses in an attempt to regain safety. When one person regulates through closeness and another regulates through distance, relationships can easily fall into a painful pursuit-withdrawal cycle. The more one person reaches, the more the other retreats; the more the other retreats, the more urgently the first person reaches. Understanding these patterns gives us a different question to ask. Instead of simply wondering, What is my attachment style?, we can begin asking: What does my nervous system ask me to do when my attachment system becomes activated? Because secure attachment doesn’t mean never becoming activated. It means developing greater freedom in what we do once we are.
