Sports cards are only the beginning. Mickey Mouse, Superman, Batman, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Muhammad Ali, Marilyn Monroe, historical figures, musicians, movie stars and fictional characters can all become entirely new collecting lanes. At some point, does having so many possibilities become mentally exhausting? The guys discuss nostalgia, personal connections and what actually compels us to add something to our collections. Does there need to be a deep emotional connection, or can appreciating the cultural and historical significance of a person or character be enough? Jeremy then shares a perfect example of buying purely because you love the card: a beautiful 1933 John Player & Sons Don Quixote card he had never seen before. He knew virtually nothing about the card, didn't check the comps and still threw in a bid. Why? Because he loved it. Sometimes the worst-case scenario is simply that you paid $100 for a card you love. The conversation also turns to whether hockey cards still have significant room to grow. Despite the explosion occurring across many parts of the hobby, cards like the Wayne Gretzky rookie in many grades haven't experienced the same dramatic movement. Rather than calling hockey "undervalued," Jeremy explains why he prefers another word: potential. Could greater interest in hockey, particularly in the United States, eventually bring substantially more demand into hockey cards? And could hockey simply be another collecting category whose moment hasn't arrived yet?
