Despite his successes and adventures after his return to the US, Joe experienced profound burnout. He found it necessary to leave medicine temporarily to reflect on why he became a physician in the first place and whether he should return. Joe wrestled with his identity being defined by his profession rather than who he was deeper down. That journey took him where he is now, a  coach and a consultant.
