A client and I recently got onto the topic of when banter oversteps the line and becomes teasing. To me, the difference is in 'how you are making other people feel as a result of what you say'. There are two types of people - Those who are Givers of Significance and then there's the people who Get Significance. A really awesome way to still meet your need for significance is to pay complements to people, and see the best in people and draw the best out of them. Meanwhile, the less resourceful of us will attempt to get their significance met in other, less resourceful ways.
