By the time the gospels were written, that understanding was completely transformed. In what scholars believe is the newest gospel in the Bible, John quotes Jesus as saying that I no longer call you servants, but friends. Here in Luke, Jesus describes a master having his slaves sit down to eat while he himself serves them- all because he was pleased to find them faithful and alert. In the scriptures, our love for God is not a one way street. There is a mutuality to our relationship. God loves us, and we love God. God is faithful to us and we are faithful to God. God serves us and we serve God.
