When Indoctrinated Kids Become Adults

from THINK BEFORE YOU SLEEP · host THINK BEFORE YOU SLEEP

A child is taught that America is evil. A teenager is taught that men are oppressors. A young adult is taught that anyone who disagrees is a fascist. Then they graduate into a world that does not care about their ideology, and they have no idea how to function. In this episode, I examine the phenomenon of children raised in ideological bubbles, whether religious, political, or social. The research shows that children who are isolated from opposing viewpoints struggle with cognitive flexibility, conflict resolution, and emotional regulation. When they enter the workforce or higher education, they are shocked to discover that most people do not share their beliefs. Some react with anger, demanding safe spaces and trigger warnings. Others react with withdrawal, retreating into online communities that reinforce their worldview. The most successful are those who experience what psychologists call cognitive dissonance and use it as an opportunity to grow. But growth is painful. It requires admitting that the adults who raised you were wrong about some things. It requires tolerating the discomfort of hearing opinions that feel like attacks. It requires developing the ability to disagree without dehumanizing. The indoctrinated child who becomes an adult has a choice: remain in the bubble or pop it and face the world as it actually is. Turn down the lights, put on your headphones, and press play because the bubble does not prepare you for life. It prepares you for a lifetime of disappointment.
