When Knowing Creates Responsibility

from Into Deep Water: Beyond the Readings · host Annie Rhodes

Episode Summary A devastating August 2026 crash in North Reading, Massachusetts, killed Andover father Samir Naili and his eight-year-old daughter Kashmira while they were stopped at a red light. The criminal case that followed raises difficult questions about intoxication, mental illness, diminished culpability, foreseeable danger, and responsibility. In this episode of Into Deep Water – Beyond the Readings, we look beyond the particulars of the case to an ancient biblical principle: once we know that something poses a danger to another person, that knowledge creates responsibility. From the dangerous ox of Exodus 21 and the rooftop parapet of Deuteronomy 22 to Paul’s teaching that Christian freedom must seek the good of our neighbor, Scripture challenges the modern assumption that personal freedom means freedom from responsibility. Catholic teaching on the common good and diminished culpability adds another layer: compassion for impaired agency does not eliminate society’s obligation to respond to foreseeable danger. What do we owe one another? And when does an accident become negligence?
