When Life Doesn't Go as Planned | The Book of Ruth Scripture: Ruth 1v1-5 What do you do when the life you're living isn't the life you thought you'd have? We all have expectations for how our lives will unfold—our marriages, families, careers, relationships, and futures. But what happens when life takes an unexpected turn, when prayers seem unanswered, and when the places we expected to find joy become places of disappointment? The book of Ruth is often remembered as a beautiful story of redemption. But Ruth doesn't begin with redemption. It begins with grief. In Ruth 1:1–5, we meet Naomi, a woman who experiences famine, displacement, and the devastating loss of her husband and two sons. Her story reminds us that following God doesn't mean life will always go as planned. In this message, Michael Newton explores what it means to trust God when life hurts, why grief is not a failure of faith, and how we can resist the temptation to interpret God's goodness entirely through our circumstances. Sometimes we find ourselves in a chapter of life we never would have chosen. But just because we can't see what God is doing doesn't mean He isn't working. Our current chapter is not the whole story. The hope of the gospel isn't that every loss will make sense or every disappointment will be resolved. It's that through Jesus, God has shown us His power to bring redemption out of even the darkest circumstances. Because grief doesn't get the final word. Jesus does. So if life hasn't gone the way you imagined, don't close the book in chapter one. God isn't finished.
