When Life Turns Bitter
from Because of Jesus... Hosted by Spencer Christian Church
What happens when the life we carefully imagined collides with the life we are actually living? That is the question at the heart of Ruth chapter one, and it is a question that cuts to the core of what it means to walk by faith. We follow the story of Naomi, a woman who left her homeland with a husband and two sons and returned with neither, only a foreign daughter-in-law and a heart full of grief. The book of Ruth opens in one of the most turbulent periods of Israel's history, a time when everyone did what was right in their own eyes, and sets an ordinary family against that backdrop of chaos and famine. What unfolds is not a story of heroes and miracles but of real people trying to survive real loss. The spiritual lesson here is both simple and profound: grief does not disqualify us from God's story. Naomi does not pretend that bitter things taste sweet. She tells the women of Bethlehem to stop calling her by a name that means pleasant and to call her instead by a name that means bitter. And yet the Bible does not censor her. It lets her pain speak. This is the ancient practice of lament, bringing our raw, unfiltered honesty before God, and it is a practice we are invited into as well. Faith, we learn here, does not require us to perform joy we do not feel. Sometimes faith simply means taking the next step even when we cannot see where it leads.
