Also called ‘detoxification’, or ‘detox’. Often triggered in aged by going into nursing home, or rehab post-surgery, as now they are monitored on medication usage, and do not have access to alcohol at home. Your mom may have a physical or psychological dependence on prescribed drug or alcohol. If physical dependence, her body will rely on taking the drug to feel normal. If she stops, she will have withdrawal symptoms.  Withdrawal symptoms may include: cravings, problems with sleep, irritability or agitation, feeling restless, trouble concentrating, mood changes, feeling depressed or anxious. Also, headaches, aches and pains, nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea. Severe could include confusion, and disorientation. Withdrawal symptoms can last for a few days or weeks. Cravings can last longer. Tips to help your mom: know these things, Work closely with medical professionals, Have her doctor stop prescriptions for anti depressants and anti anxiety meds, Monitor med distro at home and keep meds in safe, Remove alcohol from house, Be patient, Pray, Be Humble.
