Send us Fan MailWhen People Are Against UsWhen people are against us, and do not have our best interests at heart,we often feel angry, afraid, or simply disappointed.We’re tempted to seek revenge or retribution.Or at least to get them before they can get us.But Genesis shifts our focus away from them and back onto our purpose.“I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” (Genesis 12:3)At first glance, this verse appears to tell us to leave revenge to God.But a deeper reading places the emphasis elsewhere—not on those who oppose us, but on the calling God has given us.There will always be people who oppose us. Vigilance is appropriate.But we cannot allow our identities to be defined by them.Our attention belongs elsewhere: on who we are, and on how we are called to bless the world.I’m Horace McMillon.
