When Prejudice Gets Reframed: Lessons from a Senator’s Attack on Mbappé

In this special article edition of Echoes of Changes, I examine the recent racist attack on Kylian Mbappé by a Paraguayan senator and what it reveals about a much deeper pattern: narrative reframing.When prejudice meets visibility, public discourse rarely confronts the prejudice itself. Instead, it redirects toward the target, their behavior, tone, personality, or symbolism. This is not error. It is avoidance. And avoidance is how prejudice survives, normalizes, and eventually acquires perceived legitimacy.   Drawing on historical examples from Harriet Tubman, Patrice Lumumba, and Emmett Till, I show how this mechanism has operated across time, from resistance against slavery and decolonization to modern racial violence. The Mbappé case is the contemporary illustration: a clear racist attack quickly became a debate about the athlete’s reactions and demeanor. The piece explores visibility, differing societal thresholds for public prejudice, and why an elected official felt safe enough to make such statements.
