When Protesters Disrupt Mass: Peace, Prudence, and Protecting Your Family (The Patrick Madrid Show)

A video of a protest disrupting a church service left one caller from Minnesota wondering what a Catholic should do if it happened at Mass, especially with kids in the pew. On The Patrick Madrid Show, Patrick Madrid didn’t pretend it’s an easy scenario. He called the protesters what they are: “They’re bullies.” And while Christians are called to peace, peace doesn’t mean passivity when a sacred liturgy is being interrupted or families feel threatened. Patrick pointed first to preparation: trained ushers, parish security, and clear instructions from the pastor so that, if something erupts, the response is immediate and orderly. The disruptors should be removed and the issue should be taken outside. At the same time, Patrick acknowledged a father’s instinct to protect. “We want peace. We don’t want altercation. We’re there for the Lord. We’re there to worship.” But if the situation turns dangerous, the duty to safeguard your wife and children is real, and prudence matters in the moment. His bottom line was simple: lawful protest belongs outside, not inside the Mass. “You can protest all you want. Do it legally, though.
