When Refuge Becomes Bondage: Exodus 1–2 - Episode 189
from Genesis Marks the Spot · host Carey Griffel
Egypt preserved the family of Jacob during the famine. By the beginning of Exodus, however, that place of refuge has become a place of bondage. What happens when a sheltering order turns against the life it once protected? In this episode, we move from the end of Genesis into Exodus 1–2 and examine Egypt as a provisional refuge that becomes an anti-refuge. Pharaoh interprets Israel’s fruitfulness as a security threat, reorganizing Egyptian society around fear, forced labor, control, and eventually the destruction of Israel’s sons. Yet before God publicly confronts Pharaoh, the promised future is already being preserved through the hidden actions of people who refuse to cooperate with death. The Hebrew midwives, Moses’ mother and sister, Pharaoh’s daughter, and the women around her form an unexpected network of protection across social and ethnic boundaries. Their actions show that refuge is not always a location. It can also take the form of ordinary people creating space for life within a system organized against it.
