When Survival Mode Becomes Your Personality: How to Return to Yourself
from Running Man Self Regulation Skills Project · host Armando Dominguez PhD Health Psychology
Ep 159. When Stress Changes Who You Are: How to Return to CenterStress is universal.Whether we live in a major city or a rural community, whether we are struggling financially or professionally successful, every human being must navigate uncertainty, pressure, conflict, responsibility, and threats to the things we value.Modern life has changed dramatically over the last two centuries, but the human stress response has not disappeared.Industrialization, technology, constant connectivity, economic pressure, information overload, social demands, and the accelerating pace of everyday life have created new forms of chronic stress alongside many of the challenges human beings have always faced. Our ancestors navigated physical danger, scarcity, weather, disease, competition, and threats to family and community. We navigate many of those same fundamental concerns—but now they may arrive through a workplace, relationship, financial obligation, social interaction, electronic device, or uncertainty about the future. The environment changes. The nervous system still has to adapt. The problem is not that we experience stress. Stress activation is part of normal human functioning; regulation is better understood as the capacity to respond appropriately and return toward baseline than as remaining calm all the time. The problem begins when we remain in stressful states for so long that those states begin to feel like who we are.We may become harder.More guarded.More suspicious.More reactive.More controlling.More withdrawn.Sometimes these adaptations are useful. They help us survive difficult environments, perform demanding jobs, endure conflict, or protect the people we love. But there is a danger.A survival adaptation practiced long enough can begin to masquerade as identity. The person we needed to become to survive an environment can slowly overshadow the person we remember ourselves to be.This is where self-regulation becomes about far more than stress reduction. It becomes about returning to center. The Running Man Human Stress Model teaches a physiology-first approach to recognizing stress activation, regulating the nervous system, preserving clarity under pressure, and recovering after difficult experiences. The objective isn't to eliminate stress. It isn't to become passive. And it certainly isn't to become incapable of responding forcefully when circumstances genuinely require it.The goal is adaptive range. To rise when necessary. To act when necessary. To protect when necessary. And then to be able to come back.Current discussions of nervous-system regulation similarly distinguish genuine regulation from constant serenity: healthy regulation includes appropriate activation and the capacity to recover rather than remaining chronically mobilized. That return matters.Because chronic stress can gradually influence our perceptions, relationships, behavior, and sense of personal agency. Contemporary nervous-system discussions increasingly focus on protective survival patterns learned through experience and on restoring flexibility rather than treating every reaction as simply a mindset problem. You are more than the role you perform.More than your profession.More than your defensive adaptations.More than the version of yourself required to survive your hardest days.Self-regulation gives us a way to recognize when the environment is beginning to choose our state—and ultimately our behavior—for us.Center down.Recover your clarity.Return to the person beneath the pressure. And from that center, walk consciously into whatever comes next.Take care and walk well.Hey folks, let me know what you think about the Running Man Podcast.
