When The Angels Weep – Power, Pride and the Forgotten Smile Code

My mother wrote these words from Shakespeare on the wall of our childhood home and made my siblings and me memorize them: “But man, proud man,Drest in a little brief authority,Most ignorant of what he’s most assured…” I didn’t understand them then. But somehow, I knew they were powerful. One day, when neighborhood children were chasing us and throwing stones, I climbed onto a pile of wood and began reciting those words at them. They ran as though they had seen a ghost. And they never bothered us again. I smile at the memory now. But decades later, I find myself returning to those same words for a very different reason. Because perhaps Shakespeare wasn’t simply writing about one proud man. He was writing about us. We have become the most technologically powerful humans who have ever lived. We can alter genes, build intelligent machines, communicate across the planet in seconds and create weapons capable of destroying entire cities. Our power has become almost godlike. But have we become correspondingly wise? That question sits at the heart of this episode of The Smile Code Podcast. Because the real danger may not be technology itself. It may be what happens when our outer development exceeds our inner development. When intelligence outruns wisdom. When authority outruns self-awareness. When certainty outruns humility. When the façade becomes more sophisticated—but the consciousness behind it does not. Shakespeare described humanity’s “glassy essence” behaving “like an angry ape,” playing such fantastic tricks before heaven that the angels weep. More than 400 years later, his warning feels startlingly contemporary. But this episode is not ultimately about despair. It is about possibility. Because the same human being contains both possibilities: The mask and the essence.The puppet strings and self-mastery.The angry ape and the angel.Power alone—or power tempered by wisdom. The tragedy isn’t simply that human beings can behave foolishly. It is that we are capable of so much more.
