When the Caregiver Becomes the Patient: Susan Bloom’s Story

from Unspoken Emotions · host Rachel Elimelech

In this deeply emotional episode, Rachel sits down with Susan Bloom, a woman who spent over five years as the unwavering caregiver for her husband as he battled a rare autoimmune disease and subsequent blood cancer. Susan eventually found her path to healing and helping others through Equine Gestalt therapy. KEY TAKEAWAYS The invisible toll of caregiving is staggering: Over the course of her husband's illness, Susan drove more than 57,000 miles to take him to various specialists and hospitals across multiple states. Being "the strong one" often means suppressing your own reality: Living in a conservative rural community and being the daughter of a doctor, Susan felt she couldn't safely vocalize her struggles and shoved her own emotions down to remain a pillar of strength for her family and town. Medical crises compound in unimaginable ways: Susan was diagnosed with breast cancer just eight months before her husband passed, requiring her to manage her own lumpectomy and daily radiation treatments alongside his out-of-town chemotherapy appointments. There is profound relief in surrendering control: Susan experienced a turning point when she finally accepted that she could not fix her husband's terminal illness, choosing instead to mentally package her need to control the outcome and "send it back to the universe". Healing requires deliberate, active work: To process the years of accumulated trauma and grief, Susan trained as an Equine Gestaltist; she now uses her 100-acre ranch and her horses to help others navigate their own emotional pain. BEST MOMENTS "I shoved everything down. I was the strong person, not only for my family, but for everyone in the community because he was really well known." "I sat out in front of the house in my Jeep and I thought, I just want this to be over. I want him to be well again. And in that moment it occurred to me that there was another outcome, that it could be over." "When I was diagnosed with breast cancer in November of '18... I mean literally Rachel, I was like, oh well, I don't really have time for this." "I just decided that I will learn my lesson and I'll send it back to the universe." Empowered by Darkness Andrea Medina Hi, I’m Andrea Medina. Though I’m in my early 20s, the history of relational trauma in my family lineage coupled with my own father’s abuse and abandonment, has instilled in me a self-awareness and sensitivity to emotions from a young age. I was born in México and raised in Compton, a community where I didn’t have many mentors or influences that pointed me in the direction of emotional healing work. Still, I went on to publish The Energized Self: A Journey to Interconnected Healing, a book that is half memoir and half conversations with trauma survivors at the age of 22. This same year I began my public speaking journey and my master’s program to become a Marriage and Family Therapist. As I find myself rising to fulfill my soul’s calling today, I am still in the same location where conversations like the ones had in this podcast aren’t common. I’m also faced with a myriad of economic and social challenges that I know listeners will relate to. My goal is that Never Alone Infertility Morgan and Madison Never Alone is a podcast for women navigating infertility, loss, and everything in between. We’re two friends whose paths intertwined during our own walks through infertility, and we understand how isolating and overwhelming the process can be. From the uncertainty of IVF to the heartache of miscarriage and the patience required in moments of waiting, we’re here for you.Join us each week as we have real and raw conversations about the challenges and emotions of walking through infertility and loss – both from our own experiences and speaking with other women. We’re glad you’re here, and hope you feel seen, supported and most of all know that you’re never alone.
