When the City Burns

Genesis 19 is a chapter full of fire, failure, and difficult questions, but the thread running through all of it is the mercy of God. Lot was a man who had slowly drifted from the outskirts of Sodom to a seat at its city gates, shaped in ways he may not have fully recognized by the culture surrounding him. Yet Scripture, in 2 Peter 2, calls him a righteous man who was genuinely tormented by the wickedness around him. His righteousness was not based on his behavior, which was often deeply flawed, but on his faith. Just as Abraham's belief was counted to him as righteousness, Lot's faith was what set him apart. Even when he hesitated to flee, God's mercy physically took him by the hand and led him out.The destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah raises important questions about sin, judgment, and how Christians should engage with a culture that increasingly rejects biblical standards. The sins present in Sodom were not limited to sexual immorality. Pride, violence, and neglect of the vulnerable were all part of the picture. That said, Scripture does address homosexuality directly, and Christians are called to let the Bible shape their beliefs rather than cultural pressure. At the same time, there is a critical distinction between temptation and sin. Being tempted, even by something sinful, is not itself a sin. Jesus Himself was tempted in every way and yet did not sin. No one should be made to feel beyond help or beyond grace because of the temptations they face.Galatians 6 gives a clear picture of how believers are meant to respond to one another in the middle of struggle. The call is not to judge or lecture, but to gently and humbly come alongside a fellow believer and help bear their burden. Lot's wife is a sobering reminder that you cannot move forward in obedience while your heart is still reaching back toward sin. But for those who are willing to turn, the mercy of God is already moving toward them. That mercy is not just something God offers occasionally. It is part of who He is, and it is available to anyone who chooses to receive it and extend it to others.
