When the Gospel Offends

The account of John the Baptist and King Herod in Mark 6 cuts to the heart of one of the most pressing questions facing Christians today: why does the world push back against the faith, and how should believers respond? John was a prophet whose entire ministry was built on one message, repentance for the forgiveness of sins. When he confronted Herod about his unlawful marriage to Herodias, it was not a personal attack. It was the Word of God speaking directly into a sinful situation. Herodias responded with cold fury and eventually orchestrated John's execution. Herod, though he recognized John as a righteous man, was too cowardly to act on what he heard. He listened without obeying, and in the end, he lost everything.Four important lessons emerge from this story. First, God's Word is designed to expose sin, and that will sometimes feel offensive. Second, when Scripture convicts us, the right response is repentance, not resistance. Third, when God's Word offends others, believers are called to stand firm with grace and truth, not anger or compromise. The story of Finnish parliamentarian Paivi Rasanen, who endured 30 hours of police interrogation for a biblical booklet she wrote and refused to renounce her beliefs, is a modern example of that kind of courage. Fourth, right now, 388 million Christians around the world are being persecuted for their faith. They are not strangers. They are brothers and sisters in Christ, and they deserve our prayers, our support, and our solidarity.
